The Positive Parenting Program provides intensive, supportive services for families in which one or both parents have a cognitive disability. Services are voluntary and provided in the home and community. The program provides support and assistance to expectant parents, parents of infants, as well as parents of older children.
Program Services
The Positive Parenting Program provides in-home, individualized and intensive services for eligible families including:
- Assistance with basic needs such as food, housing, clothing and transportation
- Linking families to physicians and other health providers
- Child Development Screening and Education
- Nutritional Screening and Education
- Parenting Education
- Home Management Education
- Information and Referral
- Social/Recreational Opportunities
- Case Management
Eligibility
The Positive Parenting Program serves families residing in Brown County.
Families are referred to the program by a variety of sources including physicians, public health nurses, social workers and teachers. Referral sources may use the following criteria to help identify eligible parents:
- Attendance in special education classes for individuals with cognitive disabilities.
- Receives Supplemental Security Income for a cognitive disability.
- Current or previous participation in a vocational program designed for individuals with cognitive disabilities.
- Cognitive limitations reflected in the need for support in such areas as self-care, learning, self-direction, independent living and economic sufficiency.
Cost of the Program
Services are free of charge to families and are funded largely through government, United Way and community support.
Staff
Staffed by nurses and a parent support specialist who are trained to work with individuals with cognitive disabilities.
